Farina Standard Gauge Railway 1957

The Standard Gauge Railway came to Farina in 1957, and with it many changes to the layout of the railway precinct at Farina. We’ve recently been able to access plans of the Standard Gauge line from the SA State Archives.

We’ve uploaded the plans in high resolution so you can zoom in a read the detail.

Goods Shed underway

Exciting news. The new Goods Shed, being built on the site of the original Narrow Guage Goods Shed, has all necessary building permits and approvals and is being fabricated ready for erection in May. Volunteer Project Manager Steve Harding along with FRG President Bill Brock visited the shed makers to inspect progress. We’re looking forward to having the shed erected and being able to place the NSU62 Locomotive inside to protect it from the weather. The shed will then provide a display space for more railway items and information about the railway.

We’ve been making progress getting the shed in place this year for the locomotive, NSU62. We now have planning permission from Plan SA and have placed the build order with the manufacturer of the shed. We’re aiming to have the shed erected on-site this coming April or May. The volunteers will then be able to finalise the track and get the NSU undercover so that we can prep and paint it so that it is preserved for all to view. Thankyou to volunteers Steve Harding and Bill Brock for their work on getting the planning permission.

Birdsville Camp Draft 2025

As the Big Red Bash won’t be held in 2025, you might like to consider going to the Birdsville Social Club Inc. Camp Draft and Rodeo. If you’re coming up from SA then drop in at Farina to have a look around and sample the wares from the Underground Bakery.

New Ghan Railway signs

A few weeks back we reported that a group of volunteers from the Toyota Landcruiser Club of South Australia and the Outback Communities Authority had started a project to replace the now old and faded signs on the old railway trolleys along the route of the Old Ghan. Well they’ve visited Farina and we now have some nice new signs for all visitors to read.

On behalf of all visitors along the route of the Old Ghan, thankyou to the volunteers and OCA.

FRG Bi-Annual Conference 2025

Save the date – The Farina Restoration Group bi-annual conference for members will be held at the Southgate Motel Conference Room in Mt Gambier on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th March 2025.

Further details will be sent out to members in early 2025.

Farina Bakery closing tomorrow

All good things must come to an end. The Farina Restoration Group will be finishing its 2024 work programme tomorrow, Sunday 21st July 2024 at 4pm. We’re packing away our restoration tools and equipment, and will be closing the Cafe and Bakery, and of course the most remote underground woodfired oven in Australia. So get in quick tomorrow for your last chance at some tasty treats. The one legged baker will be resting the new found leg until next year.

Mauri Australia have been a major sponsor of the Farina Restoration Group for more than 5 years. Kerry, our head baker, is shown here holding a couple of bags of flour from Mauri. Over our work season we use several tonnes of baking flour. Regular watches will notice that Kerry’s got his leg back. He had enough of hopping around on one leg.
